STORIES

tomaryThese stories and tales could not have been written without the encouragement from my wonderful companion, true love and wife.
Her editorial skills go far beyond periods and commas. She once remarked, “You know what you are trying to say but the reader also has to understand. Details and descriptions are very important.”

ISCHIA

“ISCHIA AN ISLAND OFF NAPLES”
A True Story of an Italian Family of
Immigrant Fishermen, Their
Challenges and Loyalties
as World War Two approaches

“ISCHIA AN ISLAND OFF NAPLES”

The following story is tied together by three separate events.

The first part, “Ischia”, is about the lifestyle and traditions of an Italian fishing family that immigrated from the old country and made San Pedro, California their home a few years after the First World War. These events were told to me by a co-worker in a local shipyard during the 1960’s-70’s. “Scagi”, as he was affectionately known, was the younger brother to Gianni’s mother. Uncle Scagi, along with the rest of the family, spent the war on Ischia and was unable to return to the U.S. prior to the outbreak of hostilities, even though he was born here.

The second part is about his nephew, Gianni Di Mello, a young fisherman going off to war with the U.S. Army Transport Service, aboard the Steam Tug 55.

The third and most amazing event was that I had served with Gianni (Johnnie) aboard an Ocean Lighter off the coasts of New Guinea during World War II.

Things started to come together when Uncle Scagi mentioned the names of the family’s fishing boats and I recalled Johnnie’s description of the boats and his sea adventures in the Gulf of Alaska.

If any of the family should read this they may guess who I have written about, but only I will know for certain. Please forgive me for using my “author’s license” and telling the tale in first person. Ron
